Pastor Adam and Joanna Swanson, daughters Abigail & Autumn
The first real recollection of
God I remember was in third grade at First
United Methodist
Church. We were required
to memorize the 23rd Psalm. Somehow, through the Psalm, I began to understand
that the Lord was good, powerful, and that He loved me.
One day while traveling to
diving practice with my mother, she asked if she could pray for me. When she did,
the Holy Spirit came on me like warm honey.
Shortly thereafter, Momma and I
went to a diving meet in Florence,
Alabama. It was February 9, 1978,
and we were staying in a Holiday Inn Holidome hotel. That night, she explained
to me that God loved me and that He sent His Son Jesus to die on a cross for me
to take away my sin. She also explained that if I would ask Jesus to come into
my heart, He would help me become a good boy and be my best friend. I prayed and
accepted Jesus into my heart that night in the bed beside my mother and I have
never been the same since.
Later in the summer, my mother
began to speak to me about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. She brought me to
George and Betty Jackson, who were pastors of World Outreach
Church. They taught me
about the Holy Spirit and prayed for me to receive by laying their hands on me.
I did not feel anything, however, I believed and later that day began to pray
in tongues as the Spirit gave me unction.
While at Webb School,
a couple of girls accepted Jesus and many of my English papers became outlets
for my growing faith in God. My teachers started asking me to write on subjects
other than faith. The word of God was so transforming my life that I had a
friend say to me, "It seems you never say anything without referencing the
Bible."
My Senior year in college, I
asked the Lord what I was to do with my life and He told me I can do nothing
apart from Him, and then proceeded to give me a new product idea for our family
Christian business. At Swanson's I
created new products, became a salesperson for the major denominations, and
worked as purchasing agent for the company. During my second year with
Swanson's, I began to seek God about my future again.
During this time of seeking
God's direction, I heard in my heart to study the job of shepherd in the Bible.
I continued to seek God for direction and He began to deal with my heart about
attending Rhema Bible Training
Center, which my mother
confirmed. I attended Rhema for two years and began
to work with Victory Christian Center
in Tulsa.
While working at Victory, the Lord let me know it was
time to go back and start the church He put in my heart three years earlier. So
in June, I went back to Murfreesboro and on
August 28, 1995, Victory Christian
Center in Murfreesboro was begun.
In 2005, Roselyn Klapp came to
church and asked for prayer about starting a Christian School.
We talked off and on about it for a
year. Then in June, 2006, Roz and I started the embryonic form of Victory Christian School.
Please pray for all of us at
Victory as we endeavor to
continue following Jesus, making fishers of men.
Thank you for your time.
